FAQ's

How long does therapy take?
That depends on the person, their needs, goals, and desired level of support. Some clients come for just a few sessions for added support during a challenging time. Others come and go from therapy as needed. Some see benefit to long-term regular appointments as part of their self-care plan. It is a good idea to plan on meeting at least three times within 3 weeks to establish the working relationship and set goals. After that time, it usually becomes clear how frequently a person may like or need to schedule their sessions. For those that prefer to have a regularly scheduled appointment, say, "every Monday at 5pm" that can be arranged.

Why do people seek therapy? How might therapy help me?
For any number of reasons. With life comes change and stress. People generally come to therapy to help them identify how they can get from "where they are" to "where they want to be". For some, they need only an objective person to coach them and applaud their growth. Others need education and practice of new life skills. Others need intensive support to help them survive a crisis. Some just value the attention and validation they receive in therapy that they may not receive from their family and friends.

What benefits can I expect from working with a therapist?
You will finally be heard and understood. You will determine if you are functioning in a healthy or dysfunctional manner.  You will experience a release and a relief due to letting go of problems that may have long troubled you. You will gain new ways of thinking and acting to improve your relationships. You will gain greater self-awareness, self-acceptance, and the drive to move forward. You will gain the support and encouragement you have craved.

What is your experience working with children & young adults?
I have worked with hundreds of families with children; some have been school age, pre-teen, teen, and young adult. While I have worked with children as young as 5 years old, I prefer to work with pre-teens and adolescents, 10 and older. If a minor child is the "identified client" the parent(s) will be expected to come to most or all of the scheduled sessions. Some sessions may not even involve the child, as time may need to be spent helping parents understand how to better help their child and the parent-child relationship. Some families prefer to schedule a longer session (80-120 minutes) so that the child and the parents both have time available to them.

What other professional services do you provide?
In addition to the provision of therapy, I also provide regular clinical supervision to provisionally licensed social workers, presentations and educational workshops, and consultation to organizations and groups. Please contact me for more information on any of these other professional services.
